PurposeFrom Island LabsIsland Labs is a collective of technology enthusiasts whose goals are to educate the public about the use and reuse of technology. Specifically, we want to help people save time, energy and money by learning how to properly operate electronics, effectively transforming what would be landfill waste into valuable everyday tools. We currently have over 20 members, and are looking to rent a space on Long Island to serve as a community technology center. The center would provide a drop off service for individuals and businesses for old computers, printers and even scrap metal free of charge and responsibility. We plan on fixing or repurposing the machines and providing training in their use before giving them to students and families that cannot afford new products. We also want to explore low-cost hi-tech energy solutions for business and individuals - for instance zero electricity lighting, water batteries, and underground convection climate conditioning. The space would be semi-public - available for public events such as the aforementioned training and computer donations, public classrooms for all forms of engineering, and occasionally social gatherings to invite new members.
